Melaka’s well-established tourism facilities and its ability to showcase Malaysia’s cultural diversity would provide substantial benefits to the country.

THE Federal Government has officially selected Melaka as the host for the launch of the 2026 Visit Malaysia Year (VM2026) celebrations, recognising the state’s impressive infrastructure, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant gastronomy that are expected to attract both international investors and tourists.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim made the announcement during his speech at the national Aidilfitri MADANI celebration held at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) today.
He expressed confidence that Melaka’s well-established tourism facilities and its ability to showcase Malaysia’s cultural diversity would provide substantial benefits to the country, the state, and its citizens.
“Looking at Melaka’s readiness in terms of culture, food, and infrastructure, if organised well, this will undoubtedly benefit the country, the state, and the people,” Anwar said.
Anwar emphasised the decision to launch the major tourism event in Melaka was made with minimal additional costs, in line with the state’s preparedness to host such a significant event.
“That’s why I am inclined to agree to have the launch of this tourism year in Melaka without incurring excessive additional costs,” he added.
Last month, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing confirmed the federal government had agreed to make Melaka the venue for the launch of the 2026 Visit Malaysia Year.
This decision includes the approval of funding for the event, with the Melaka state government taking the lead in preparation.
In addition to its cultural offerings, Melaka has become a magnet for foreign investment, particularly from countries like China and Germany, due to its excellent infrastructure and efficient governance.
Additionally, Anwar highlighted that when travelling to countries like Germany or China, Melaka’s reputation is firmly established due to its strong infrastructure, competent civil service, clear policies, and leadership.
“I mention this because when we visit Germany, China, or other countries, Melaka stands out because of its infrastructure, the efficiency of its officials, its policies, and the clarity of its leadership in expediting processes,” he explained.
Anwar also praised the role of Melaka’s state government in facilitating investment and accelerating development projects, stressing that these efforts were crucial in positioning the state as an attractive destination for investors.
“The state government’s role in speeding up these processes is highly welcomed…for example, in Melaka, the ease of doing business and the focus on attracting investments has expedited development,” he said.
With the selection of Melaka as the launch city for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, the state is poised to play a pivotal role in promoting Malaysia as a global tourist and investment destination, capitalising on its growing reputation as a modern hub with a deep cultural legacy.
Also present at the event were Melaka’s Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, and other federal and state government leaders. – April 5, 2025.
