Phu Quoc, voted the world’s second most beautiful island, welcomed 151,000 visitors during the five-day holiday for Reunification Day and Labor Day (April 30-May 4), marking a 20% year-on-year increase despite unfavorable weather.

The island saw nearly 27,000 foreign tourists, a 22% year-on-year increase, according to Kien Giang Province’s portal.

Bui Quoc Thai, director of the provincial Department of Tourism, credited the surge to a variety of entertainment activities and diverse promotional campaigns.

Despite heavy rains in some areas of the island, the holiday period saw a notable boost in tourism.

The Vietnam’s largest island has set a target of serving 7 million tourists this year, including 1 million foreigners.

Last year, it was voted the world’s second most beautiful island by readers of the American magazine Travel + Leisure, trailing the Maldives.

Vietnam’s tourism sector served an estimated 10.5 million domestic and international visitors during the holiday, a 31.2% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism.
