On 1 March 2025, more than 3,500 people gathered at Tanjung Rhu Beach in Langkawi to witness an extraordinary natural phenomenon—the formation of a sandbar that temporarily connects the mainland to two nearby islands.
This rare event occurs when the sea level drops to an extreme low of 0.0 metres, revealing a sandbar stretching almost one kilometre from Tanjung Rhu Beach to Pulau Chabang and Pulau Kelam Baya. This creates a unique opportunity for visitors to walk across the exposed seabed, experiencing marine life up close and enjoying the surreal sensation of traversing a path that is typically submerged under the Andaman Sea.

During high tide, these islands are only accessible by boat due to the depth of the surrounding waters. However, for the fortunate participants of this year’s event, the receding tide allowed them to explore the sandbar on foot, taking in the breathtaking scenery and rare sights of the exposed marine ecosystem.
Among those present to witness this fascinating spectacle were Kedah Tourism, Culture, and Entrepreneurship Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Salleh Saidin, Langkawi District Officer Mohamad Subhi Abdullah, and Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) deputy chief executive officer Wan Kamarul Faisal Wan Kamardin.
Langkawi’s Sandbar Walk is a testament to the island’s natural wonders, drawing visitors eager to experience this fleeting marvel. If you missed it this year, keep an eye on future tide charts—you might just get a chance to walk on water in Langkawi!
