On 8 September 2025, Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark took a significant step by forming a sistership agreement with Taishan and Kanbula UNESCO Global Geoparks in China. This new partnership aims to foster stronger ties among these internationally recognised sites.

The agreement paves the way for knowledge sharing and collaboration in several key areas, including sustainable tourism, cultural and educational activities, joint conservation research, and the mutual promotion of each geopark. By working together, these geoparks plan to exchange best practices and expertise that can benefit their communities and the wider geopark network.
This sistership highlights the ongoing effort to build a global community of well-connected and sustainable geoparks, in line with UNESCO’s vision. As Langkawi, Taishan, and Kanbula deepen their cooperation, they help strengthen the value and impact of geopark initiatives around the world.
