Tucked away in Antarctica, there’s a glacier that appears to bleed. This phenomenon, called Blood Falls, pours out from the edge of Taylor Glacier. At first glance, the sight of red water staining the icy white landscape looks almost unreal.
The secret lies beneath the glacier. Deep below the ice, water has remained sealed off from the outside world for more than 1.5 million years. This hidden reservoir is packed with iron. When the water finally escapes and meets the air, the iron reacts and rusts, giving the flow its vivid red colour.
Blood Falls is a rare glimpse into ancient chemistry at work and serves as a reminder of how much of our planet still holds surprises.
